About the Author

Arthur Berl Fox is adjunct professor of United States and Canada Geography, and World Geography at Community College of Allegheny County, in addition to teaching Pittsburgh History and Civil War and Popular Culture at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. He has a Masters of Arts Degree in History from Duquesne University and undergraduate degrees in History and Anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh.

Mr. Fox is best known for his 2002 book, Pittsburgh during the American Civil War, 1860–1865, and Our Honored Dead, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, published in 2008. In addition, he has published over 50 newspaper and magazine/journal articles pertaining to military history; researched and wrote approximately 80 cultural resource management reports pertaining to Pennsylvania; and was a contributing author of the 1994, African-American Historic Sites Survey of Allegheny County.

Pittsburgh during the American Civil War 1860-1865 fills a large gap in the existing literature about Pittsburgh’s role in the Civil War.  Historian Arthur B. Fox has painstakingly unearthed and researched archival materials to integrate the military, social, medical, business and economic facets of its history.
